What does the future hold for Scotland's dairy industry?

Posted 31/10/2014

Scotland's dairy industry is set to be the focus of November's AgriScot event, which will be held on November 19th at Ingliston near Edinburgh.

Gary Mitchell, Chairman of NFU Scotland's Milk Committee, A panel of experts, including James Grant - Scottish Dairy Growth Board Chairman,Stuart Martin from the Scottish Dairy Hub and James Withers, Chief Executive Scotland Food and Drink, will debate the issue and answer the question "What does the future hold for Scotland's dairy industry?".

Gary Mitchell said: "

“Since 2007, dairy product values have risen significantly but without Scottish dairy farmers or processors ever fully making the most of the potential offered. [...]Now that prices are falling, the negative consequence of a global dairy trade is highly volatile prices and challenging costs for the entire dairy supply chain. Dairy is now highly and irrevocably globalised and small changes in supply and demand have huge impacts on dairy farmers, as well as processors."

He went on to say that events like the seminar can play an important role in helping the Scottish dairy industry recover. He said: "This seminar, the NFU Scotland dairy farmer survey and our ongoing dialogue with milk processors will help establish what work is needed in 2014 to get the Scottish dairy sector back on track."
