Increased risk of summer mastitis

Farming during the summer months can be an extremely pleasant experience. The warm weather makes a great change from the cold experienced in the winter, and there plenty of opportunities to make the most from the sunshine.

But it’s important to ensure your animals are safe during the summer. There are a higher number of cases of summer mastitis during this time, so prevention is key. It can be an extremely painful disease for cattle, with swelling of hind legs,  

Avoid grazing in any areas susceptible to fly swarms and have a dry cow strategy in place. Brown salves and Stockholm tar are traditional repellents that can be used to combat flies, in addition to pour-on anti-parasite treatments such as pyrethroid.
