New calls for clear Halal meat labelling

Posted 08/05/2014

The BVA have now said that any animal that is not pre-stunned prior to slaughter, the packaging on the final meat product should be clearly labelled showing this to allow consumers to make an informed decision when purchasing meat.

The association are concerned that the meat from non-stunned slaughter is appearing on our supermarket shelves and shopping outlets with no advice on how the animal was killed. There is currently no requirement to label a product stating if it was stunned prior to slaughter or not. This call has come in since supermarkets such as Tesco and marks & Spencer's have confirmed they were selling halal lamb imported from New Zealand which was not labelled.

Earlier this year, Denmark banned halal and kosher slaughter on animal welfare grounds.

But the UK government said it had no plans to ban the religious slaughter of animals for their meat.
