The USA has emerged as the world's biggest meat consumer, according to a recent list created by the Heinrich Boell Foundation. Over 246lbs of meat per person was consumed, while European countries such as Germany (194lbs) and Spain (213lbs) were not far behind. The UK had an equally huge appetite - at 185lbs per person.

The world's second largest consumer, according to the foundation, is Australia. More than 244lbs of meat was consumed per head. Its smaller neighbour, New Zealand, managed to consumer 233lbs of meat per head, which is impressive given the size of its population - over 4.5m in 2014, according to the latest census.

Mongolia was among Asia's biggest consumers of meat, with its population consuming around 180lbs of meat per person. This was far more than its neighbour China, which only managed 127lbs per head.
