HISTORICAL NOTE:
A former C of I Rectory which owes its origins back to the late 18th Century, having been constructed in 1788 by the Vicar of Rathcore Rev. Christopher Mc Allister at a cost of £406. Interestingly all of the land in the townland of Rathcore, which comprised 829 acres with the exception of the Rectory and the Glebe lands belonged to an English family named Bridges. In Lewis’s Topographical Dictionary of 1837, it states ‘there is a good Glebe House on about 41 acres although part of this land was subsequently sold. The Rectory remained in church hands up until 1959, over 170 years of continuous occupancy by the church, during which time the Glebe Lands were productively farmed.
Rev. Richard Ryan, Rector from 1826 – 1837 supplemented his pastoral income and gave employment to a number of farm laborers by actively farming the land. Another Rector, the Rev. James Edward Harnett Murphy 1881 – 1919 reportedly tilled the land, cut hay and kept bloodstock. In 1910 the Rector purchased on his own account lands that had previously been sold off (in or about 40 acres). The Church of Ireland agreed to purchase this land from the Rector at a cost of £650 plus £32 auction fees which he had paid for it. However, the sale was not completed as the Rathcore Church authorities were unable to raise the finance required and so it remained the property of the Rev. James Murphy. Years later in 1938 the Church of Ireland again tried to acquire the 40 acres from Rev. Murphy’s family but their offer was not accepted and it was subsequently sold to another party who in turn sold it and it now forms part of the Rathcore Golf & Country Club.
Rev. Murphy passed away in 1919 and was succeeded by Rev. Herbert Oswald who was well regarded along with his wife as being a caring and hard working couple who kept a lovely home and farmed the land diligently. Rev. Oswald was succeeded by Rev. Ambrose Benson Rector of Rathcore until his retirement in 1957. Following the amalgamation of Rathcore and Agher with Castlerickard and Rathmolyon, the Rectory and Glebe Lands were surplus to the Church of Ireland’s requirements and were sold and there has been a successive number of owners up to the present day. The vendors acquired the property in 1989.
RATHCORE GLEBE:
Comprises an imposing two story over basement property having a handsome mellow brick façade enhanced by a pitched slate roof with tall chimneys and large windows overlooking what was once the pleasure gardens and parkland beyond. The rooms are well proportioned but sadly no longer retain any of the period features that once would have graced its interior. Following a fire in 1981, the property has remained in a derelict state.
THE GATE LODGE:
A single story detached residence comprising four rooms on a small site fronting the public road. The property has been vacant for a number of years.
THE LANDS:
In total extend to about 13 acres / 5.26 hectares comprising parkland, a mature oak beech coppice and a 2.5 acre paddock. The lands have been well cared down through the years and are in good heart, presently under old pasture and well fenced.
OUTOFFICES:
Lovely old cut stone buildings in a dilapidated state. 4 bay haybarn.
