Scottish processors meet with farmers on current beef prices

Posted 12/05/2014

Representatives from NFU Scotland and the Scottish Association of Meat Wholesalers (SAMW) will be meeting to discuss the number of prime cattle that is going to be coming forward, discussing weights and specification.

Currently the Scottish deadweight steer price has fallen more than 50p/kg from its 418.4p/kg high peak in last July, this was when prices had shot up after the supermarkets horsemeat scandal. Industry members also complained in February that the deadweight pricing grids were brought in by the processors almost overnight, with stricter penalties for out-of-spec stock.

Officials have stated that prices are up and down for different reasons; they state that other issues need to be addressed and sorted such as managing the production cycles and coordinating them with demand.
