How will the Autumn Statement Affect You?

Posted 04/12/2014

The Autumn Statement which was delivered on Wednesday by the Chancellor of the Exchequer, George Osborne, garnered a lot of media attention thanks to the reforming of stamp duty and the freezing of fuel duty. The announcement that the economy grew faster than previously expected helped seal the deal.

But what does it mean for farmers in the UK? The National Farmers Union issued a response to the Chancellor's statement, noting that while the freezing of fuel duty and the announced measures to help small businesses would help farmers, excluding farms from the stamp duty reforms was somewhat disappointing.

Andrew Clark, the NFU's director of policy, said: "The freezing of fuel duty for a further year, exempting apprenticeships from national insurance, and a further extension to small business rate relief all have the potential to help farmers. However it is disappointing that the changes to Stamp Duty Land Tax relate to residential property only."
