UK’s top suckler herd award launched

Posted 22/07/2014

A new competition has been launched to find the UK’s top sucker herd. Organised by the Beef Shorthorn Society and sponsored by Morrison’s, who is offering a £1,500 prize fund, the 2014 Suckler Herd of the Year is looking for the best herd among farmers who own 30 or more suckler cows.

The overall winner will bag £500 plus a £250 voucher towards the cost of a Beef Shorthorn at a society sale. Three runners up will receive a £250 voucher.

Judges Mary Vickers, from EBLEX, and Mark Holmes from the Beef Shorthorn Society, will look at not only the health of the herd, but how well the Beef Shorthorn has performed within the suckler herd. Other factors they will look at, include marketing, financial management and technical management.

Frank Milnes, from the society, said: “Once again we’re offering top UK commercial producers the opportunity to be recognised and rewarded for the performance of their suckler herds using Beef Shorthorn bulls to produce a functional suckler cow with natural foraging ability and the effect that these have on their enterprise.”
