Safety first: July 21st is Ireland’s National Farm Safety Awareness Day

Posted 15/07/2014

Safety is paramount in a farming environment, but sometimes it’s easy to forget to take the necessary precautions, especially when you’re facing tight deadlines or are under financial pressure. Farmers need to ensure everything is done safely and securely.

To help achieve this, July 21st is the Irish Farmers Association (IFA) National Farm Safety Awareness Day. They are encouraging farmers to set aside a few hours on the day to ensure they make their farms as safe as possible; undergoing any additional safety checks if necessary.

Compliance with the Safety, Health and Welfare Act 2005 is another major issue. A safety statement is a mandatory requirement for any farmer who employs three or more people; those with fewer than three can use the Farm Safety Code of Practice to help carry out a Farm Safety Risk Assessment to comply with the regulations.
