The Environment Agency are defending the slow start to dredging

Posted 22/05/2014

There is currently around 8km of dredging needing to be completed in two rivers, Parrett and Tone. There is some 250,000 tons of silt and mud to be removed from the rivers.

The work started on the 31st March to help the water move more quickly and freely through the rivers, so far only 13,050 tons of silk and mud have been removed from 445 metres of river. There is 250,000 tones expected to be removed in total.

The Environment Agency update said its contractors were continuing to work long days from Monday to Friday. “We are looking at the possibility of some weekend working as a further contingency,” it said.

An earlier update said there were currently three excavating machines working five days a week.

“We are looking at our programme, resources and working times to ensure works are completed as quickly as possible,” the agency said.
