The transported truck crashed around 4am, it collided with the safety barrier just before the A60 turnoff and ended up being lodged in place.
Reports say the driver was not injured however over 1,500 of the hens were killed upon impact. RSPCA officials confirmed that many of the hens were seen to be roaming around the carriageway making their way into cars stuck within the tail backs. Many drivers stuck in the jams were uploading photos of themselves with the hens as they entered their cars.
Other sources have confirmed many of the hens found their way to a local nearby animal sanctuary of which the staff have now begun a rescue mission to find them homes.
